Rhino was a 14 week old puppy who had been dumped in a shelter in South Dakota. The shelter manager felt he was a wolf hybrid and determined he should be put to sleep. Luckily one of the staff thought he was an Akita and took him home with her. After a week, he was moved to a rescue for German Shepherds and recognized as an elkhound.

Our national rescue coordinator was contacted and she in turn emailed us.

Marlene Oliver and Bev Evans, went to a show in South Dakota and picked him up, and transported him to Rochester to be met by me. I fostered him for several days . He was so winsome that in socializing him, I found a new home for him with Barb who had a number of rescued Shelties and cats.

 

She and her husband named him Reno, which was much better than Rhino... although he still does charge around through the woods!

He has fit into the family very well except he still isnt a Sheltie and retained his elkhound independence.
