Working English Shepherds Policy on Litter Listings

First and foremost, the goal of Working English Shepherds is to preserve working stockdog ability from which we believe all other English Shepherd characteristics derive. In addition, purity of the breed is essential to maintain for English Shepherds to breed true. From these principles our guidelines for listings are derived. We are determined to remain true to this goal to balance the trend for more pet type, companion dogs in the current age.

Please know these policies are not designed to insult or alienate anyone. They do however, reflect our beliefs in what we choose to support within this breed.

*PLEASE REFER to pedigree notes listed at the end of this page when  looking at individual pedigrees.

Requirements for litter listings are as follows:

 1. At least one of the mating pair must have some exposure to stock and have shown some ability working sheep, goats, ducks, geese, hogs and/or cattle. An instinct assessment would be the bare minimum. Preferably both parents would fill this requirement and more. In the future we will tighten this requirement, as more dogs become available that are working stock.

2. Litter listings require registerable pups from registered parents. If parents are of a step-in nature, you must agree that this will be clearly disclosed. Pedigrees that contain dogs not previously known as English Shepherds will not be listed. If a fully registered dog skipped step-in procedures this will also be disclosed. Pedigrees for litters will be available online for viewing, with notations as appropriate.

3. We will not list personal websites on litter listings that link to sites that imply approval of crossbreeding of the English Shepherd. We will list purebred litters without those links.

4. All listings are subject to approval of the website owners and policies may change as the need arises.

We reserve the right to pass on listing dogs that clearly deviate from traditional English Shepherd standards.

5. We will give an honorary designation for certain litters as Heritage English Shepherds. For a litter to have a Heritage designation, both sire and dam must have at least 6 generations of registered purebred English Shepherds in their pedigree.  Heritage litters will be noted as such at the beginning of the litter webpage.

To further clarify the Heritage policy and in acknowledgement that this breed has always maintained an open studbook, a dog must be 7/8 English Shepherd and the following generations forward, counting to 6, must be pedigreed and bred to pedigreed English Shepherds before it obtains the Heritage designation.

We hope to see breeders striving to increase litters that qualify for a Heritage designation.

We thank all those breeders who choose to use our site and help us preserve the English Shepherd as a working stockdog, striving for a standard of excellence!
To submit a listing for the Working English Shepherd website, please submit your pedigrees, working information, and information about the litter to: wildoats@hopkinsville.net   or starlighthill@charter.net.

The Working English Shepherd website does not guarantee puppies or litters.  Responsibility lies with the litter owners & buyers.

PEDIGREE NOTES:

1. SHININGER LINES ; It has recently become known and verified that Shininger's Brandy was 1/4 New Zealand Border Collie. Shininger's Brandy was purchased from a farmer who bred unregistered English Shepherds and selected for working traits. Mr. Shininger saw Brandy's dam work, liked what he saw, and purchased a pup from her litter. Unbeknownst to Mr Shininger, Brandy's dam was 1/2 New Zeeland Border Collie and 1/2 unregistered English Shepherd. He registered him as a single registration with IESR. It has recently been confirmed by Brandy's breeder that Mr Shininger was not told about the Border Collie in the background. Shininger's Brandy is firmly woven into the English Shepherd breed at this point and his descendents have been bred to purebred English Shepherds.

2. PIPER LINES: Brook's Penny came from the Piper line of VA. The story goes these dogs were once registered and originally came from the old black/tan Blankenship and/or Wheelbarger lines of TN, but while Mrs. Piper kept records, she ceased registering the dogs, just selling to local farmers. Bonnie Brooks bought Brook's Penny, and after much discussion and show of records to UKC they agreed to start the registration process again. If they had been IESR registered, Penny would have been Step I .

3. PETERSON: . These dogs have not been registered but have been known in the English Shepherd world as good working type English Shepherds for many years. Their looks show classic English Shepherd type, as does their temperament and working ability. To our knowledge they have never been known by another breed name.
Some of these dogs supposedly go back to the registered Merz lines.

4. PARMELY: These dogs have not been registered but have been known in the English Shepherd world as good working type English Shepherds for many years. Their looks show classic English Shepherd type, as does their temperament and working ability. To our knowledge they have never been known by another breed name.
