Tribute to a very special ?Lady?.
Ch Arangold Lady of the Lake, 26/9/87-26/4/04
On the 26th April at the age of 16 years 7 months, and 7 years to the week from when her master went to Rainbow Bridge Lady went to meet him.
For those of you who have not been in the ?Golden? world for as long as Lady, I will fill you in with a few reasons why she was so ?special?.
Lady came from a remarkable litter of 6 bitches. Their sire was Grand Champion Amberline Fidele owned by Greg and Lesley Robins and their Dam Grand Champion Happy Donagh of Monterey QC owned by Margaret and David Hean. For many years this was the only litter of Golden Retrievers from two Grand Champions.
Lady was proudly owned by or owned, ( I?m not sure which!!) by John and Margaret Hean. The others in the litter were
Arangold Lady Luck (Gemma), owned by Glyness Taylor
Arangold Living Legacy (Ivy), originally owned by Margaret Hean, kidnapped by Murray Taylor
Arangold Lady Fidele (Lucy), owned by Louise Brown, Margaret Hean
Arangold Lucky Chance (Tammy), owned by Marilyn Black
Arangold Leading Lady (Lady), owned by Ann-Marie Whitely, Barbara Brydon
In 1988 all six of ?the girls? as they were affectionately know made their way up to the National Dog Show in Wellington and to the best of my knowledge it is still the only time that six bitches from the same litter have ever been shown in the same class at the National. In fact they made it into the Wellington newspapers!!
These girls are behind many of todays goldens and formed the basis of many of todays successful kennels such as Glynmuir, Goldriver, Regency, Taraleah, Glenhall, Lytham, Whiteleigh, Tammara, Brocade, Leitrim, Dunferlyn, Sunrapt, Wintergold to name just a few.
John was extremely proud of Lady?s achievements especially when at the West Coast Shows she took top honours taking BEST IN SHOW All Breeds. She was the third of Grand Champion Happy Donagh of Monterey QC?s progeny to do so, following after Ch Arangold Star Prince CDX owned by Chris Lewis and Ch Arangold Royal Prophesy QC owned by Margaret and David Hean. These were all from different litters and from different sires.
Lady had one litter for John, to Grand Champion Charterhall Gaelic Gold. They were born on New Zealand Trotting Cup day and produced both a New Zealand Champion, Ch Arangolds Bonny Chance owned by Beverley Charles, and an Australian Champion Ch Arangolds Blossom Lady owned by Bev Eastwell.
From her second litter to Aust and NZ Ch Charterhall Laird O Aran she produced a dog puppy who went on to qualify as a Guide Dog working both in New Zealand and Australia and also an obedience winner.
.
As an All Breeds Best In Show Winner, Lady proudly represented the Goldens every year at the ?Supreme Dog Show? for the last 3 years being the oldest dog exhibited.
After John?s untimely and tragic death Lady went to live with Wendy and Martin Hewitt of Bassett Hound fame. Martin now being the Vice President of the NZKC. Here at Hunterspark, she had a life that could only be described as ?heaven? for a dog. She was really ?lady? of the manor, welcoming guests both two and four legged to the Hewitt household, taking herself down to the river for a swim when ever she felt like it and generally ruling the roost. Wendy and Martin I know John would thank you from the bottom of his heart for making her latter years so pleasurable.
A Lady in name and a Lady in nature would be how we could describe you, you always did consider yourself to be one step above everyone else and certainly kept both John, and your other bed mates in line. John had to have a king size water bed to fit them all, Lady was in one corner, Flight (Ch Arangold Flight O Fancy)in the other, DJ (Ch Arangold Welcome Guest)beside him and Little Aran (Essex of Bowendale)and Marley (Ch Arangold Wandering Star)guarding the door.
By now you will have them all in line at Rainbow Bridge and be bossing them around as you always did.
Sleep easy dear Lady you will always be remembered and you live on in your children and grandchildren.
A very sad, but very proud Margaret.
