Dog training books & Videos

There are many good training books available both from the library or online shopping. These are a few of my favourites.

bullet Before and after getting your puppy.
Author Dr. Ian Dunbar. The star of the British television show Dogs with Dunbar has been teaching pet owners to train their dogs humanely and thoroughly for over 30 years. In this compassionate and honest volume, the veterinarian shares his definitive opinions about the way dogs should be trained. This is a great tool that anyone who wants to get a dog should peruse before they bring their pup home because, as the author points out, owning a dog is a big responsibility, and "millions of dogs are euthanized each year simply because their owners did not know how to housetrain or chewtoy-train them." Dunbar includes information that prospective dog owners should know before they select a puppy, and he also explains how to meet his proscribed series of important Developmental Deadlines (two of which come up even before the dog reaches its new home!). In addition to a step-by-step guide to every stage of puppyhood, the book includes practical services, such as a pre-puppy shopping list and lists of the best dog training books and videos.
bullet How to teach an old dog new tricks

bullet Clicking with your Dog
Author Peggy Tillman. Clicker Training: Step-by-Step In Pictures. Teach you dog the friendly, easy way to sit to greet people, walk on a leash without pulling, come when called, stay home alone quietly, find the right place to "go" and play hide and seek and other fun games and tricks.
bullet The Power of Positive Dog Training
By author Pat Miller. The Power of Positive Dog Training is the best book yet on explaining how and why purely positive training works. Inside, you'll find easy to read discussion of the philosophy of positive training followed by training tips and exercises. This book is geared toward the dog owner who wants to develop a relationship with their dog based on friendship and positive reinforcement, not fear and punishment. You get 30 chapters with instructive illustrations, including an easy-to-follow, step-by-step, six-week basic training program (with diary) for any dog. From the Back Cover
bullet The Culture Clash
By author Jean Donaldson. I think this book should be required reading by anybody who has owned a dog or intends to own one. The Culture Clash is special. Written in Jean's inimitably informal yet precise lecture style, the book races along on par with a good thriller. *The Culture Clash depicts dogs as they really are - stripped of their Hollywood fluff, with their loveable 'can I eat it, chew it, urinate on it, what's in it for me' philosophy. Jean's tremendous affection for dogs shines through at all times, as does her keen insight into the dog's mind. Relentlessly she champions the dog's point of view, always... Read more
