Baxter @ GRRF

We recently adopted Baxter from GRRF after a trial live in home appearance. We wanted to make sure he could handle living with Skye & Suzie Q, who could be quite annoying to an older dog. Well to say the least he can dish it out to them as well as he puts up with the two. Although he still really doesn’t play with toys he will bring a toy to us for the girls. He is so at home you would think he lived here his whole life. We are so pleased with him and his golden temperament we couldn't have asked for a better pup.

Baxter’s Story from Golden Retriever Rescue of Fairbanks:  10/14/07 Baxter is an 8 year old Golden Retriever/Husky that came from Heart 4 Life Rescue group in Delta Junction.  He was owned by young lady that moved to Fairbanks and could not take him. She gave him to Heart 4 Life and they had him a while and thought he was a candidate for GRRF as he would get more exposure and he is such a friendly outgoing dog he would make a great indoor dog.  Baxter is very friendly with other pets and is surprisingly very good in the house in foster care.  He has been an outdoor dog most of his life.  His foster mom thinks the world of him.  He is kind and is good off leash on walks with her other dogs.  He is loose in the house and is great.  Baxter was neutered and had an extensive vet work up.  His bloodwork was normal and he had a benign tumor removed on his hind end.  His hips were x-rayed and look fine as does his chest, however a mass was found on his spleen on the abdomen radiograph.  After healing for a few weeks after is neuter and tumor removal GRRF decided he was doing so well and feeling great we had Dr. Stuve from Aurora Animal Clinic (his Vet.) perform a splenectomy (removal of his spleen). The surgery went very well and the mass in his spleen had not ruptured or spread to his liver.  However a smaller mass was found under his kidney and was not operable.  Baxter has recovered quickly and fully.  He is his outgoing and happy self.  The biopsy of his spleen came back non cancerous at this time.  We cannot guarantee how long Baxter's luck will hold out but we know he deserves a loving home for however long we are blessed to be with him..
